Over A Rainbow

I am extraordinarily grateful to have been selected to an Artist in Residence at both SPAM! (Italy) and Akropoditi Dance Centre (Greece). The studios, cultures, and landscape combine to make it a luxury to be working on this new work “Over A Rainbow” where
36 000 pictures of everyday, life, and love accumulate and flicker over interior monologue and movement designed for 2, 6, & 10 dancers—where the artists attempt to fly “Over A Rainbow” and in doing so portray a bold prayer, so that audiences observe:
—That flying isn’t natural, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t do it
—That falling is a part of flying
I use choreology to assist in the development and reception of our work. Choreology is the study of dance notation or the aesthetic and scientific study of all forms of human movement by movement notation. Nevertheless, my curiosity with choreology extends beyond the ability to write-out dance (in Labanotation for example) to a setting where movement can be better identified and clarified in the communication between the choreographer and dancer—using the science of choreology.
I believe that if the ability to communicate narratives in contemporary dance is elevated, public engagement in contemporary dance will also increase. I also believe audiences will be more engaged as a consequence of their enhanced understanding of the performance.
Over A Rainbow premiered at the Akropoditi Dance Fest in July 2016.
